Millions of people will reset their clocks this autumn as daylight saving time ends across much of Europe and North America. The yearly change renews debate over health, safety, energy use, and whether seasonal clock shifts still serve a useful purpose.
European countries are scheduled to return to standard time on October 25, 2026. Most of the United States and Canada will follow on November 1. Local rules differ, so travelers and workers should confirm the schedule where they live.
Why Clocks Change Twice a Year
Daylight saving time moves an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening during warmer months. Governments have often presented the policy as a way to make better use of daylight and reduce energy demand.
Germany adopted a national daylight saving policy during World War I. Other countries later followed. The United States created a national framework in 1966, though states retained some authority over participation.
The modern energy case is less clear. Lighting now represents a smaller share of household electricity use. Any savings can be reduced by greater demand for heating or air conditioning.
The practice is also far from universal. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time. Many countries near the equator avoid clock changes because their daylight hours vary less during the year.
Health Experts Favor Standard Time
Sleep researchers have raised concerns about changing clocks, especially the spring shift that removes an hour from the night. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine supports permanent standard time because it aligns more closely with human sleep cycles.
Seasonal clock changes can disrupt sleep schedules and make it harder for people to adjust, especially after the spring transition.
Research has linked the spring change with short-term increases in sleep loss, workplace injuries, traffic crashes, and some heart problems. Individual studies differ, and they do not show that every person faces the same risk.
The autumn change gives most people an extra hour overnight. However, earlier sunsets can affect evening travel, exercise, and mood. Children, older adults, shift workers, and people with sleep disorders may need more time to adapt.
Permanent Time Remains Disputed
Public frustration has fueled proposals to end the twice-yearly switch. Yet there is no broad agreement on which time should become permanent.

Officials also advise checking smoke and carbon monoxide alarms during the seasonal transition. Phones and computers usually update automatically, but appliances, vehicles, and mechanical clocks may require manual changes.
The central policy question remains unresolved. Ending clock changes may reduce disruption, but choosing permanent daylight or standard time would create different costs across regions. Future legislation will need to weigh public preference against evidence on sleep, safety, and winter morning darkness.
