Stop Being Like Everyone Else (And Do the Things that You Always Wanted to Do)

Published on: April 7, 2010

I am currently reading Rework by Jason Fried and David Hansson (The Buck Stops Here in our April issue  had a brief review of the book along with three other new books). What I like about the book is the author's approach to common sense management. They debunk most "common sense" theories. For example, business plans, they say, are overrated because there is too much guesswork.

One of the things that I took away was "marketing is not a department" (p.193). The thought here is that every touch with your clients is marketing. One thing we are going to implement right away is to put some of the hundreds of testimonials that we have on our invoices.

As I have been reading the book it reminded me of all of the ideas that I had when I started the New York Enterprise Report. Like many entrepreneurs you want to do things differently from your product to little details like invoices. But things happen and you end up doing many things like everyone else.

After reading this post think about some of the "wacky" ideas you had. Just do them.
