Really Insightful Leadership Tips: Part II

Published on: February 17, 2010

I recently blogged about leadership speaker Pat Murray and his invaluable insights. In this post I am going to focus more on Pat's advice for getting people on board with your agenda. He saw doing this as a three step process:

1) CV - explain a compelling vision that touches emotions.

2) BP - create a "burning platform." People will rarely trade familiar pain (where you are now) for unfamiliar pain (where you want to be). You do that by "scaring them with facts;" that sends a clear message that "we have to move quickly."

3) LA - create a logical approach of how to get from A to B. This is where you need their input which will result in them owning the problem along with you.

He also shared that there will always be afterthoughts of your decisions. This is what is said in the restrooms, water cooler, etc. And out of this will come some additional things you need to think about. So, when making certain decisions and sharing with your team, make them "tentative" decisions that will be revisited in 24-48 hours, so people can think it through.

Two last pieces of Pat's advice are among my favorite:

- Problems create energy and growth

- Stop picking up other (your employee's) problems.
