Why it’s great: Many companies profess to have a family atmosphere; but in reality, they are more like a dysfunctional family where employees are willing to hop on the first opportunity out. According to employee Rita Lindsay- Sonatore, “We’ve all worked at places where ‘family first’ was preached, but not practiced. FieldView truly lives this mantra."

One example of this is when FieldView Solutions decided to re-locate their office. The leadership took into consideration the commute time and distance each of the employees would face, and made their decision based on that.

FieldView also offers employees paid time off (PTO) instead of the traditional break down of sick days, vacation days and personal days. Founder and CEO Fred Dirla has found that giving employees flexible time off actually helps with productivity. “I would say I’m the king of flex time,” said Dirla. “The way I run my business is we don’t have a time clock here. It is a performance-based culture. They can come and go as they please and everyone knows we are held accountable for the performance side of things, not for showing up at 8:30 am, leaving at 4:30 pm and taking an hour for lunch. We’re all adults.”

According to Dirla, this management style has been successful because he has found it motivates people to go above and beyond and he has never had an employee take advantage of the laid back approach to clocking in. FieldView subsidizes a large portion of 401k, stock options, medical, dental and vision benefits. “Because we are a smaller company and we are in a very specialized market, it isn’t easy to entice people to come here over the larger competition,” said Dirla. “I’ve always had the philosophical approach of a father with two kids and a wife. I want to make sure that they are covered and I don’t want to be selfish, so I make sure everyone else has that coverage as well. I made cuts in the organization to make sure that the benefits stay whole for everybody. I’m a very touchy-feely CEO in that regard.”
