As one of the 99 percenters, it irritates me to see so much time, energy and effort wasted on Occupying Wall Street (OWS). Don't get me wrong. I'm pissed at the corruption taking place in the executive boardrooms of Wall Street and people should go to jail for ripping off investors. But don't hate the majority of the 166,000 people who bust their asses on a daily basis to earn a living.
They are at their desks before must of us are out of bed, and they get home after many of us are done with our dinners. They are one or two bad trades from collecting unemployment and now they have to deal with the whiners who are pissed that their own gravy trains have left the station. If you really want to sink your teeth into a good protest, here are five suggestions:
1) ONBA - While greedy players & owners decide on how to divvy up the last millions of their multi-billion dollar contract, tens of thousands of working class families and small businesses that rely on the NBA for most, if not all their income, are getting screwed! The worst part is that if/when they finally do decide on who gets the Maserati and who gets stuck with a Mercedes Benz, and they lace up their sneakers, stupid fans will welcome them back with open arms.
2) OLIRR - The same people who take the Long Island Railroad into NYC to OWS should save commuting time and occupy their local train station. The LIRR is now mired in a $1 billion scandal involving employees and doctors ripping off taxpayers...that would be you and me.
3) ONYPD - Cops fixing tickets for friends and family was an accepted practice for years. Running guns, dealing drugs, making assault cases disappear and taking bribes, however, is not acceptable.
4) OU - Unions. They served a purpose years ago to emancipate employees from abusive and sometimes illegal practices by owners. Unfortunately, the pendulum has swung too far to the left and now unions represent much of what is wrong with our country. We need to get rid of defined benefit pensions, free healthcare for life and bad employees. All of these ills are draining America's resources to be competitive in a global marketplace. It's hard to compete with the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) when we saddle our businesses with billions in taxes to pay for free healthcare and guaranteed pensions for union workers. If President Obama really wants to be fair, addressing this entitlement would be a good place to start.
5) ODC - I saved the best for last. Is there anyone alive in this country that doesn't think we need to completely gut the federal government and start over? Seriously. I have two words for Congress ‑ term limits. Get elected, get the job done and then get the hell out. Lobbyists and PACs should not be allowed within 100 miles of the Capitol. I'd rant more but I'm writing a separate post on the top 10 changes we need to make in Washington. Suffice it to say, if we are going to pull America out of the sinkhole we fell into, it all starts with DC.
