A work/life balance is achievable and good for business, too

I wish that work/life balance was taught in kindergarten and all throughout school. I have spent hours putting together a presentation to convince people that their "other lives" matter. I am continually amazed about how this is a new idea for some. To help determine how balanced we really are, I’ve come up with a list of questions:

  • What fun thing did you do today and what fun thing will you do tonight? Remember, it only has to take five minutes.

  • How many vegetables did you eat? How many calories have you or will you consume? Have you weighed yourself today? Yesterday? Do you know where your scale is?

  • Did you log onto your bank accounts today? Checked your credit card bills? Paid your bills up to today? Checked out some new web sites like mint.com, or learnvest.com?

  • Have you had your physical appointment this year? Colonoscopy? Eye exam? Mammogram?

  • Have you had a date with your partner? A fun conversation? Had sex?

  • Have you given back to your community, or did you do a good deed today?

It doesn't take much to lose your way and it doesn't take much to get back on track.  I find asking clients these simple questions can be motivating and empowering to get us back in gear.  My morning started with a three mile brisk walk while talking to a good friend about all the world’s problems. I was so pumped that my meeting was on track and super productive. I am a believer that we need a good old fashioned kick in the butt to see our lives as whole. Too many of us are discouraged and believe that work/life balance is unobtainable. It is possible, and most importantly, good for business.
