Governor Christie talks about work/life balance. He defended being in Disney World when the Christmas blizzard hit because that was his family time, but hopping on a police helicopter to get to his son's game? Come on.
The irksome point of the story is not the cost to the state –a few thousand dollars –when budgets are strained; it is that he said it was impossible for him to be a good dad and governor without the chopper trip.
To that point I say: "Welcome to my world!" The world of the taxpaying entrepreneur who flies commercial and drives herself from client to playing field. We are running businesses with busy schedules and families. My week included my senior in high school’s lacrosse tournament, my aging parents with medical issues, and a recent college graduation. Not to mention hosting the new boyfriend of my college-aged daughter, so I understand the strain of making everyone happy, including myself.
Helicopters aren't available for most people.
Like everyone else, Governor Christie needs work/life balance skills, better planning, and better decision making to help him make the right choices that won't break his bank or the state's. He needs the strength to make the choices, too. We all need to learn to just say "No!” Whether that means stretching a political to be a supportive dad or asking for another bit of understanding from a son in support of a life in politics.
