In our Company Next Door feature, Clickable CEO David Kidder talks about his company’s quest to make search and social engine advertising beautifully simple—and profitable—for clients. In this web-only feature, he talks about the three core values that keep his company cohesive:
“With more than 150 people in our company—and we’re growing—and a big group of employees in India, we need to create values that cross oceans and are timeless, in a way. The values are not so much aspirational as they are very practical and easy to measure. They are:
The 7 to 1 rule
Seven to one is the ratio of good to bad. We try to do extraordinarily more good than we do bad. But when we do fail, we basically forgive each other and move on and we don’t look back. This leads to a contempt-free culture, with low to no politics. It creates an ecosystem that allows people to move quickly without suffering the wounds of working together—which can happen a lot in business—and lets you be transparent and direct. That allows our customers to be more honest and transparent as well. While people, people, product and data are not perfect, no one has better intentions or works harder than we do to solve problems. That’s a powerful, refreshing message to send.
Simplicity
Everything we do should be simple and beautiful. This is a high calling. Simplicity is very difficult to do well, and this value leads to a lot of thoughtfulness in our work.
We are an “and”, not an “or” culture
That means we join two work ethics that are typically disjoined. We love product AND we love sells. We love to sell AND also love to build. Both of these ethics work in concert with each other and make each other better.
All of these support our company’s purpose: To make online advertising simple so companies can survive and thrive.”
