Garrett Higgins- Partner, O’Connor Davies Munns & Dobbins, LLP
Not just any advisor can shepherd a nonprofit from “good idea” to “thriving organization.” That, however, is the special expertise of Garrett Higgins.
As head of the exempt organization tax and advisory practice at his firm, Higgins assists not-for-profits throughout all stages of their tax “lifecycle”, from the initial set-up phase through maturing and playing an integral role in their communities.
In the area of tax law and regulation, the nonprofit world has changed dramatically over the past few years, requiring an advisor to have knowledge extending far beyond tax regulations. New disclosure requirements, online watchdogs, and the decline of grants and donations make it necessary for a nonprofit to demonstrate compliance, both to the government and to the consumer.
“In a tough economy for grants and donations, a lot of the work we do is ultimately not just about compliance, but about marketing,” says Higgins.
To help his clients and other nonprofits stay on top of new regulations— and present themselves in the best possible light—Higgins regularly conducts seminars and workshops. He also offers his expertise to the community through workshops sponsored by the United Way of Westchester and pro bono advising for the East Ramapo Little League, the Rockland Farm Alliance, and the Rockland County Land Trust.
