Printed city guides are becoming a relic of the past thanks to mobile city apps like Not For Tourists (NFT). NFT is one of the latest iPhone apps to hit the scene and generate a large amount of buzz. NFT started as a provider of printed guides (written by local editors) for the transportation systems, shops, restaurants, parks, sports stadiums, night life, and so on, of major US cities, complete with maps. Business travelers can live like locals while far from home thanks to features including an interactive map with thousands of location listings, neighborhood descriptions, an option to save listings, and a rotatable city view; plus, the app works without Internet. The app also provides the address, phone number, and website of a particular location, as well as directions from your current location.
A review of NFT is available on the Los Angeles Times Daily Travel & Deal Blog. The app can be purchased through iTunes for $4.99 for New York City; San Francisco; London; Washington, DC; Chicago; Boston; Seattle; and Los Angeles. Upcoming cities are Philadelphia, Miami, Paris, and New Orleans. [They just added Boston and Seattle in very late December, and the upcoming ones are announced here].
