When you come back from a week’s trip or, sometimes, just at the end of a normal day, you’re loaded down with receipts, business cards, bills and all kinds of “business” paper. NeatReceipts’ Scanalizer is a portable scanner combined with advanced optical character recognition (OCR) software. The software extracts key information from your receipts and business cards, analyzes and organizes the information and automatically formats the information for Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Quicken and QuickBooks for “effortless” organization. You’ll gain time for other things by having a “digital secretary” organize your documents. The cost is $229.95. More information is available at www.netreceipts.com.

4info Open Platform

Maybe you would like your customers to be able to easily find out if a product is in stock or on sale. Instead of having them go to a website or call you, there’s a service now available that allows them to use their cell phone’s text messaging features to obtain information from your Web server. 4info Open Platform lets you distribute your Web content to cell phones via text messaging. Using 4info’s Web-based forms and tools, you can set up a keyword that triggers the retrieval of the appropriate data from a content feed on your Web server. Users can receive your content by using their cell phone to text a keyword (e.g., “valves”). 4info then translates the SMS (short message service ) text message into a Web application request for your Web server, takes the result and translates it back into an SMS message to the requester’s cell phone. You can even use a keyword and a search term (e.g., “valves Chicago”). Instead of your having to search a website for information, 4info’s service sends the query to the website with the keyword.

It then returns the results of your query as a text message. This can work with any data you have on a website, including product inventory, sales data, project status information and more. This can be used internally by your staff as well as by your customers. For example, you could set up a private database for your sales team, and sales agents could text message a keyword to receive updated pricing information.
